By Gabrielle Cajas SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – The federal government will pay $5 million to the victims of David Renz.
In 2013 David Renz escaped his ankle bracelet and went on to murder a school librarian and rape a 10-year-old girl. That girl is now 16-years-old and the settlement has created a $3.7 million trust fund for her.
At the time, Renz was awaiting a trial on child pornography charges. He removed his GPS-monitoring ankle bracelet, reassembled it with duct tape and a screw, and then left it on his bed in Cicero. He then proceeded to drive to Great Northern Mall in Clay. He stationed himself in the mall parking lot, waiting for girls to leave a gymnastics class. Renz was able to abduct a Liverpool school librarian Lori Bresnahan and a 10-year-old girl.
Renz admitted to stabbing Bresnahan to death and raping the girl.
Bresnahan’s estate and a guardian for the girl sued the federal government for failure to monitor Renz’s whereabouts using the bracelet.
According to investigators, he was able to disable and reassemble his ankle monitor over 40 times.
After four years of litigation, an agreement was finally settled.
