SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — It’s time for Syracuse residents to let it snow! The first lake-effect snow storm began last night and has been continuing all day today. Central New York is notorious for inclement weather and bundling up is a necessity.
S-U sophomore Daniella Issacs has her car on campus, and here’s what she had to say about how she feels driving in the snow ” Like 50/50 because I get into a car accident in really bad weather so driving with bad conditions is not my favorite”. She says, “It is kind of scary and it does get really icy here really fast and like darker here really fast”.
S-U sophomore Erika Steinhart is from Colorado, so she is used to the cold weather. She advises newer Syracuse residents to layer their clothing and make sure they always stay warm. Her biggest tip though? Shoes with good tread. She says, “I’ve seen so many people wipe it, just wipe out walking to class”. Safety is definitely a main concern when it comes to bad weather, so make sure you find comfortable shoes that are made for the snow.
Steinhart also advises to give yourself more time in the morning because the bad weather personally slows her down. Seasonal depression is very common in the winter months. Steinhart says “A good way to combat seasonal depression is to try and get that sun while it happens cause I feel like when the sun goes away, yeah it could be hard but snow is so pretty and it is easy to ignore it”.
Driving in the snow is way harder, and there’s one tool you’ll need, which is a car scraper. Daniella says “The car I have right now is not the best for snow. I can tell even when it is a bit windy my car shifts more which makes me a little nervous”.
If you’re planning on driving in the snowy weather this winter, you can always visit the New York State Department of Transportation’s website to learn more on snow and ice control. You can also receive weather alerts.
