LAKIN: The housing selection process at Syracuse University requires planning and strategy for students to get the dorms they want for the next school year. But mostly, it’s a game of luck. Jasmine Lin is a sophomore at Syracuse University who went through the housing selection process last year. She chose to register for a Living Learning Community so she would have an earlier selection time and be able to live on Main Campus for her second year of required, on-campus housing. But some of her friends were not so lucky. With their late pick times, they ended the selection process with no housing at all, leaving them wondering where the university would find space for them to live.
LIN: The waiting process was very stressful for them. They emailed, um, and called and, you know, the housing people would say ‘oh, just be patient, we’ll find you housing.’
LAKIN: Jasmine’s friends had to wait weeks after the housing selection process ended before they found out the university would be putting them on South Campus. Students who want to live in an L-L-C for their housing next year can begin their housing selection process today, while the rest of campus has to wait. Housing for them will begin next Monday and run throughout the rest of the week. Since S-U students are only required to live on-campus for two years, many upperclassmen look to find off-campus housing options. But with so many students trying to find somewhere to live, they may find themselves signing their lease up to a year in advance.
LIN: The process of getting an apartment was really, really tough because we had to think about it right before we came back to school so once we got here, we had to go apartment searching, house searching, call all these different places.
LAKIN: With the university’s recent announcements of more student housing options for next year, rising sophomores can hope the odds will be in their favor. Shayna Lakin, N-C-C News.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Syracuse University students will soon be given the opportunity to select their on-campus housing for the 2024-2025 academic year. While current freshmen are required to live on campus for another year, the university only requires two years of on-campus housing which means sophomores and juniors may have already signed their off-campus leases for next year.
Jasmine Lin is a sophomore at SU who participated in the housing lottery last year. She says her friends had a difficult time finding anywhere that was still available by the time their selection time arrived.
“I know my friends went through a crazy process where they had really bad pick times, they ran out of the housing that they wanted, and they had to wait a long time to be put into a place where they really wanted to go,” Lin said.
Lin and her friends are planning to move off-campus next year and have already signed their lease for an apartment building close to campus. She says even that process was extremely difficult.
“The process of getting an apartment was really, really tough because we had to think about it right before we came back to school so once we got here, we had to go apartment searching, house searching, call all these different places,” Lin said.
While housing selection for those choosing to live in a Living Learning Community began today, the rest of campus will have to wait until next week for their chance to pick their student housing.
