Mikey Lamarre (Anchor): ELSEWHERE Central New York is dealing with a Listeria outbreak, and N-C-C’s Malachi Washington SAYS more on how one local restaurant is protecting it’s clientele…

Malachi Washington: When you walk into Schoolyard Bagels located on the corner of Marshall Street and University Avenue, the first thing you’ll notice is a large sign that reads Boars Head Certified.

But co-founders Carmine Cura and Nicholas Castranova say these signs may overstate their business relationship

Nicholas Castranova: We carry many different products from many different purveyors, Boars Head just happened because he comes here and delivers certain meats to us like our Taylor Ham and our bacon, and he wanted to give us the signage.

Malachi Washington: Cura and Castranova say that they’ve been carefully watching the news of the Boar’s Head product recalls over the weekend, and they can assure their customers that they will be protected.

Nicholas Castranova: Well we are keeping our eye on it, and we are in touch with our distributors because the stuff we get is right here. It comes out of Newark New Jersey so this way we, as you say, protect the public

Malachi Washington: The Onondaga Health Department is working on preparing an official statement on the outbreaks.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) –For Schoolyard Bagels owners Carmine Cura and Nicholas Castranova, their relationship with Boar’s Head is far less integral to their business than the multiple in-store signs may indicate.

“We’re not a Boar’s Head Premium Restaurant per-se, it’s one of the products we carry,” said Castranova.  The owners made the clarification following a recent outbreak of Listeria in Central New York that came from multiple Boar’s Head products.

Schoolyard Bagels has been serving the Syracuse campus community for six months, and they say that there is no need to worry about Listeria, because they only use select products from Boar’s Head that weren’t affected by the outbreak.

“Well, the good news is those products that were recalled, we don’t really have any of them on our sandwiches.” Castranova says that Schoolyard exclusively receives Taylor Ham, Bacon, and select cheeses, while the outbreak mainly affected liverwurst products.

The Onondaga County Division of Environmental Health says that they are preparing to make a statement on the outbreaks soon.
