The Petit Branch Library in Syracuse is celebrating Women’s History Month with an exhibit called “Imagination Revealed”. This exhibit will focus on art and literature made by women, for women.
The library features a handful of paintings, quilts, pottery, and other items displayed on walls and bookshelves. The librarians also pick out a selection of books, mostly written by female authors, to showcase to their visitors.
Librarian Lisa Bankert emphasized the importance of Women’s History Month as something “to celebrate the achievements of women in every area of life… every field… everybody from a mom up to a rocket scientist.” She’s especially fond of a half-metal, half-wood sculpture of an eagle, perched on a branch with a bone in its beak that sits on a table in the library.
Lisa elaborated on how this library exhibit brings the community together. “I’ve always met new people from here. It’s always good to tie in to the community, so you know people coming in… It shows that our library is a real community place.”
Lisa’s coworker, Jeanne Keller, praised her employer for demonstrating gender inclusivity, especially in management positions. “We’re very fortunate to be able to have women who are in the administrative and leadership roles, and it’s just nice to see that women get promoted here,” Keller said.
These art pieces and novels will be available all month long at the library.
