SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Spring is here and that means baseball.
With 2019 being the first season for the AAA Syracuse Mets, the New York Mets paid a visit to the Carrier Dome on Tuesday. The ball club hosted a team workout as part of an effort to build excitement for the upcoming season.
Central New York baseball fans came out in full force to watch the team and its star players practice. A total of 4,296 fans poured into the Carrier Dome to take it all in.
Mets fan Christianelle Diroc struggled to contain his enthusiasm.
“Oh man, I’m so excited,” Diroc said. “To be honest with you, I’ve never been to an MLB game or a practice before. I’ve met a lot of players, but I’m really excited.”
Many of the fans inside the dome were children. Paul Teschner was there with his son and his grandson.
“All my sons and grandsons are Mets fans,” Teschner said. “It’s in our DNA, I think. And we’re all very excited.”
The trio spanning across three generations was not going to miss this event for the world.
That same feeling could not be shared by some of the New York Mets players. Superstar pitcher Noah Syndergaard was quoted Sunday online as not looking forward to the short trip to Syracuse. His main gripe with the stop in Central New York is that it’s a lot of travel too close to Thursday’s opening day. Syndergaard claims other players agree with him.
Long time Mets fan Tammy LaRosa can see why Syndergaard feels the way he does.
“I understand where he’s coming from,” LaRosa said. “He’s, you know, been practicing every day down in Florida. He’s here and hopefully he’ll be happy that he did show up because he’ll see all the fans that are here for him and the team.”
Syndergaard and the New York Mets open up their season Thursday in Washington, D.C. The Syracuse Mets get going April 4th at NBT Bank Stadium.
