By Michelle Houston SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) The Syracuse Common Council voted to increase parking rates today. If approved parking could cost $2 per hour throughout the city of Syracuse.
The rate increase was proposed by Councilor Tim Rudd to help fill a deficit in city of Syracuse revenue.
One thing that will stay the same are parking tickets, which you can get is if you don’t pay for parking.
Knowing when and where free parking is available can be really helpful.
Where ever you see a pay station or parking meter means you have to pay for parking on that street.
Street parking is enforced in city of Syracuse from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
So that means parking is free before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m. on those days. It also means street parking is free on Sundays.
Parking is also free in Syracuse on major holidays, the next time this will be enforced is on Fourth of July.
Another way you can get a parking ticket is if you don’t pay after the time expires. One way you can do so is through the Whoosh parking app. You can choose the amount of time you need for your parking spot. You can also pay through the mobile app and don’t have to at the pay station.
If you do get a parking ticket, make sure to pay it on time, because once you have a few tickets in collection there is a chance the city could place a boot on your car.

Michelle: Yes that’s right.
Parking will no longer cost one dollar twenty five cents in Syracuse. It will cost 2 dollars an hour, throughout the city of Syracuse.
This was a proposal from Councilor Tim Rudd in to fix a deficit of 60 thousand dollars in the city’s revenue.
And while the price for parking may change, one thing that will stay the same and is here to stay are parking tickets.
So here are some general tips on when and where to park to avoid them.
Where ever you see a pay station or parking meter means you have to pay for parking on that street.
Street parking is enforced from 9 am to 6 pm Monday through Saturday in Syracuse.
So that means anytime before 9 am or anytime after 6 pm you don’t have to pay for parking.
And it also means there is free street parking available on Sunday.
And that’s the case for major holidays as well.
But that won’t be in effect until the next holiday, fourth of July.
Residential streets in Syracuse is another place with free parking. These are called the Odd Even Parking spots.
The way this works is based on whether it’s and odd or even day.
If it’s an odd day you have to park on the side where there are houses with odd numbers from 8 am to 8 pm.
If you are not on the right side of the road during that time frame then you can get a ticket.
Today is the 16th which is an odd day, so from 6 pm to 6 am you should be parked on the side with odd number houses.
Now if you’re someone who’s on the go and does not have time to pay for parking. You can do so with a mobile app.
The Woosh App allows someone to pay for parking with their phone.
Michelle: Just a quick demonstration here. let’s say you want to go park on Comstock Ave you just click the location right and then you click start parking session and that’s how you’ll be able to set everything up now if you want to register for it just download the app right on your phone and put in your information and you’ll be all set to go.
Now as far as the parking rates go, it is expected to change on September first.
