COMMUNITY RELATIONS DIRECTOR MICHAEL NORTMAN HAS COME UP WITH A UNIQUE PLAN FOR RIDERS.
Michael Nortman: We’re going to have a Meals on Wheels twist to the race. I’m going to give them a bag of fake meals, empty milk cartons with a label on it for each location. So they go to the location and deliver the meal – get a stamp and move onto the next location.
Bailey Arredondo: MEALS ON WHEELS HAS BEEN FEEDING THOSE IN NEED FOR SIXTY YEARS IN THE ONONDAGA COUNTY. BUT NORTMAN SAYS FUNDRAISERS LIKE THIS SERVES A BIGGER MOTIVE.
Michael Nortman: The main purpose is to raise money to help feed our clients. The secondary purpose is to get the word out about our program. We have been around for sixty years, this is our sixtieth year anniversary so we are trying to get the word out.

By Bailey Arredondo Syracuse, N.Y. (NCC News) – Meals on Wheels is hosting a fundraiser this Saturday that requires participants to hop on their bikes and ride around Syracuse. This Alley Cat Bicycle Race is similar to a scavenger hunt, and will require riders to follow a list of locations to retrieve a stamp that can be exchanged for prizes.
Meals on Wheels Community Relations Director Michael Nortman says his goals for the event is to have near a hundred bikes riding and to spread awareness about the program.
“This bike races main purpose is to raise money to help feed our clients,” Nortman says. “We have been around for sixty years so hopefully we can get the word out to people to volunteer and donate so we can be around for another sixty years.”
Saturdays fundraiser is just a small sample of what Nortman believes Meals on Wheels Syracuse has to offer. The Syracuse location is the largest in the Onondaga county and focuses on home bound seniors and people with disabilities.
Starting at 11 bikers begin at Mello Velo Bike Shop. It costs 25 dollars per person to ride and 100 dollars for groups of five.
