By Alexa Roth, SYRACUSE, N.Y. (N-C-C News)- Stricter gun laws are coming to New York state. Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law two gun control bills. One of the laws extended the waiting period from three days to 30 days for background checks to clear.
The current federal law requires gun dealers to wait three days before selling a firearm if someone is not approved by the background check. Governor Cuomo believes the extended background check will give law enforcement more time to complete a more detailed background check.
Gun salesman David Steinberg says,”I’m not sure if waiting 30 days instead of three or four days gonna make a difference. If someone’s thinking about it anyway, and they got to wait three days. What’s another couple days?.”
A bill was also signed on Monday banning the use or sale of bump stocks which is the device that can be attached to semi-automatic rifles to increase the firing speed of a semiautomatic rifle.
The ban on bump stocks became pertinent after the mass shooting in Las Vegas that killed 58 people back in 2017. The shooter used a bump stock that allowed him to fire more shots at a quicker speed.
The new law which applies to all gun dealers in New York, will take effect this September.
