The Barnes Center Promotes A New Mind, Body, and Soul The Barnes Center

By Kayla Miller SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC NEWS) — The Barnes Center at the Arch has officially opened at Syracuse University. Hundreds of people have gathered at the new recreation facility to explore all the physical and mental health activities available to students.

Syracuse University students will find multiple spaces for exercises such as cardio machines, group exercise rooms, rock climbing, a swimming pool, and more.

The Barnes Center is not all about physical exercise, but rather a major emphasis on improving students’ mental health. In the health and wellness section, you can find a brand new counseling center that is readily available for students suffering with issues like anxiety and depression.

Students can de-stress after a long day or week of classes in the Crowley Family MindSpa. In this space, they can mediate or have a relaxing massage in the massage chairs. Syracuse University sophomore Ashley Tubens has already enjoyed some downtime in the MindSpa.

“I think just being here alone is very soothing and calming. I’ve had opportunities to share my freedom of expression and creativity,” Tubens said.

Another way The Barnes can help with mental health is the therapy pet room. The Barnes have collaborated with an organization called Pet Partners. Volunteers and their dogs will come in three times a week, and students will be allowed to relax and pet their furry friends.

Elaine Onofrock is a dog handler with Pet Partners. Since the opening, Onofrock said everyone welcomed the dogs with open arms.

“Just seeing people smile when they walk in is what it’s all about,” Onofrock said.

You can find more information about The Barnes Center at the Arch and their new facilities on its website.
