OUR ALEXANDRA JENNERJAHN LEARNED HOW ONE MAN’S STRUGGLES, HELPED SHAPE HIS FUTURE.
THANKS, LADIES. IT WAS A HARD DECISION, BUT ONE THAT GUY, SCOPAS

“IN THE BEGINNING LIFE WAS NOT GOOD BECAUSE WE WERE RUNNING.
RUNNING FROM THE WAR, RUNNING FROM BULLETS, AND GUNS AND BOMBS.”
GUYA SCOPAS BETHREL WAS AROUND TEN YEARS OLD WHEN A WAR IN HIS HOME COUNTRY, UGANDA, FORCED HIM AND HIS FAMILY TO FLEE TO SOUTH SUDAN AND BECOME REFUGEES.
“I HAD TO WALK AND IT WAS LIKE 3 DAYS WALK TO THE BOTTOM OF UGANDA, AND
YOU BARELY HAVE SOMETHING TO EAT, BUT YOU HOPE THAT YOU EACH HIT THE
BORDER.”
HIS TIME AS A REFUGEE WAS HARD, BUT SCOPAS SAYS IT HAS HELPED HIM PURSUE THE LIFE HE SPENT HIS YOUNGER YEARS IMAGINING.
“I STILL SAY IT WAS A BLESSING BECAUSE IT’S THE REASON I HAVE COME THIS
FAR. IT WAS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR MY EDUCATION.”
SCOPAS SAT IN REFUGEE CAMPS AND WATCHED MEMBERS OF THE UNITED
NATIONS HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR REFUGEES READ, WRITE AND SPEAK
ENGLISH. THIS INSPIRED HIM TO PURSUE A CAREER IN MASS COMMUNICATIONS.
” I WOULD TELL PEOPLE IF THEY ASKED ME WHAT I WANTED TO BE IN THE
FUTURE, I WOULD TELL THEM I WANT TO SPEAK FOR EVERYONE HERE. I HAD TO
GO TO WHERE THEY STARTED, WHICH IN MY MIND AT THE TIME WAS THIS SCHOOL.”
SCOPAS IS NOW A GRADUATE STUDENT HERE AT SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY, STUDYING BROADCAST AND DIGITAL JOURNALISM, AND SAYS HE WISHES THESE
OPPORTUNITIES WERE GIVEN TO HIM DURING HIS UNDERGRADUATE YEARS.
“I LIKE EVERY BIT OF IT. BECAUSE THIS SCHOOL IS A SUPER SCHOOL
WITH A LOT OF FACILITIES, VERY FRIENDLY PROFESSORS, VERY FRIENDLY
COLLEAGUES AS WELL. HONESTLY HERE… AS LONG AS YOU ARE WORKING HARD… THE SKY IS THE LIMIT FOR YOU.”
AFTER RECEIVING HIS GRADUATE DEGREE, SCOPAS INTENDS ON TAKING THE
SKILLS HE LEARNED IN NEWHOUSE, BACK TO SOUTH SUDAN TO REPORT ON SOCIAL JUSTICE ISSUES.
FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL, I’M ALEXANDRA JENNERJAHN.
TWO FRATERTINITES ON CAMPUS HAVE BEEN OFFICIALLY PLACED UNDER INVESTIGATION.
UNIVERSITY OFFICIALS SAY Z-B-T AND A-T-O WILL BE INACTIVE UNTIL THE INVESTIGATION IS COMPLETE.
THE REASON FOR THE INVESTIGATION IS STILL UNCLEAR.
Z-B-T WAS ALREADY ON PROBATION THROUGH THE END OF THIS YEAR AFTER HAZING ALLEGATIONS FROM 20-18 SURFACED LAST YEAR…
SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY WILL NOW PLOW SIDEWALKS ON TWO BUSY OFF-CAMPUS STREETS– EUCLID AVENUE AND COMSTOCK AVENUE.
THESE ARE TWO OF THE MOST POPULAR STREETS FOR STUDENTS LIVING OFF CAMPUS…
CITY OFFICIALS SAY MAYOR WALSH ASKED CHANCELLOR SYVERUD IF THE UNIVERSITY WOULD HELP WITH THIS.
S-U’s DECISION TO ADD THESE CITY SIDEWALKS TO THEIR PLOWING ALLOWS THE CITY’S CONTRACTOR TO ADD MORE ROUTES IN OTHER RESIDENTIAL AREAS OF THE CITY.
OUR SHOSHANA STAHL IS LIVE IN STUDIO TO TELL US HOW STUDENTS FEEL ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY TAKING ON THIS RESPONSIBILITY.
THANKS, DANA AND MICHELLE.
WE DID A POLL ON THE MORNINGS ON THE HILL TWITTER ASKING IF STUDENTS WERE FANS OF THIS DECISION.
70 PERCENT OF PEOPLE WHO VOTED WERE ON BOARD SINCE IT AFFECTS THE DAILY LIVES OF STUDENTS ONCE WINTER HITS.
30 PERCENT OF PEOPLE WHO VOTED SAID IT WASN’T WORTH THEIR TUITION MONEY.
ON OUR INSTAGRAM POLL– 88 PERCENT OF THE PEOPLE WHO VOTED LIKE THE SCHOOLS DECISION.
FROM SOCIAL MEDIA IT SEEMS THAT STUDENTS APPRECIATE THE SCHOOL PLOWING THESE MAIN STREETS FOR OFF-CAMPUS LIFE.
TIME TO CHECK YOUR WEATHER FOR TODAY.
SHARIF KING IS LIVE OUT ON UNIVERSITY AVE TO TELL US WHAT TO EXPECT.
SHARIF HOW DOES IT LOOK OUT THERE.

Exciting news for Survivor fans that can’t get enough of the competition driven series. Our Alex Peebles is life in-studio on what one Syracuse university group is doing to localize the popular reality TV show.
Thanks, MICHELLE, Survivor has been sweeping the nation’s colleges, and Syracuse University is hopping on that train, bringing the drama-filled competition to campus.
Survivor is in the midst of its 39th season, driving viewers across the nation. Some Syracuse University students are bringing a spin of that show right to campus. Luke Uriarte is the president and host for Survivor Syracuse said this show has given him a chance to meet people he otherwise would not have if it weren’t for the show.
“Coming into college I only knew like my group, my solid like 20 groups of friends, that’s pretty much it. Kind of knew like some people, but having this opportunity to just meet new people with different backgrounds. Outside of Newhouse, Whitman, the colleges that I’m in, Really exposed me to how they interact.”
Uriarte added that news of the show has spread like wildfire across campus.
“We’ve had over 70 applicants for season 2, so its tough to determine who would be good some of the main focus points we wanted to see was a commitment to the club, seeing that they would show up to every single tribal council or challenges, personality, not being just a dry personality. Something that could bring something new to the game, and also a difference in background, we wanted to bring together people from different schools, different upbringings and stuff like that.”
Even though many people see Survivor Syracuse as a great place to meet new friends, this type of show can cause some uncomfortable moments for cast members.
“There’s a lot of drama that can happen. All of these people did not know each other at the beginning and now they are close friends as it went down the line. And once the voting happens, it’s tough.”
But first season cast member Curtis McAuliffe said that is all outweighed by the relationships he has forged.
“I had only known as one other person in it and then everybody else, I had like heard about them through other people. And then, I didn’t really expect to become as close to them as I am now.”
SEASON ONE OF SURVIVOR SYRACUSE IS SET TO AIR JANUARY 9TH. FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL, i’m Alex Peebles.
IT WAS A BUSY WEEK FOR S-U ATHLETICS ON THE HILL…
