SYRACUSE N.Y. — The Syracuse Common Council voted today to delay making a decision on fate of a historic building.
The Angeloro Building on North State Street has been standing in Syracuse for over 115 years and is currently the home of San Miguel Mexican Restaurant. However, the current owner of the building, Tino Marcoccia, is now trying to knock it down in order to re-develop the property.
Local preservationist groups have been lobbying local government officials to grant the building “protected site” status. If the Angoloro building is designated a protected site by the Common Council, Marcoccia will not be able to demolish the property without the city’s permission.
Last month the Syracuse Planning Commission recommended that the Angoloro building be designated a protected site, but ultimately the decision to protect the building will be made by the Common Council alone. The Common Council met today and determined that they needed to become more familiar with the situation before passing judgement on if the building should be a protected site.
The Common Council will vote on this issue in a future Common Council meeting session.
