I’m Brianna Yates reporting for NCC News. Here are the stories making news today, October 23rd.
A respiratory illness has broken out in Upstate New York. Enterovirus D-68 mostly affects children, and it’s known to cause weakness similar to polio. While 39 cases have been reported, none are in Onondaga County. Medical Director Quoc Nguyen says if the virus does come to Onondaga County, we will be ready.
Quoc Nguyen: “We’re more at tune to it, and we can diagnose it more readily.”
With midterm elections just two weeks away, Onondaga County expects increased voter turnout. Democratic Board of Elections Commissioner Dustin Czarny believes absentee ballots will contribute to the growing number of voters.
Dustin Czarny: “We’re estimating that we will have more registered voters on hand than we did in the 2016 presidential election.”
Syracuse University’s fraternities and sororities will open their doors to local trick-ortreaters. Greek-or-Treat is an annual event where Syracuse children can trick-or-treat for candy and participate in games and activities. Greek-or-Treat will take place this Friday at 3:00 PM.
It’s cloudy with a high of 53 degrees today, and possible thunderstorms tonight.
