ALL THAT PLUS YOUR WEATHER COMING UP ON THIS EDITION OF MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
GOOD MORNING I’M ALEXANDRA JENNERJAHN. THANKS FOR JOINING US FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
AND I’M BAILEY ARREDONDO. HERE’S A LOOK AT SOME OF THE STORIES WE’LL BE TALKING ABOUT IN OUR SECOND HALF HOUR.
YOU’VE SEEN IT ALL OVER THE COUNTRY. THE CORONAVIRUS HAS AFFECTED PEOPLE, BUSINESS, AND NOW UNIVERSITIES.
REPORTER MICHELLE KNEZOVIC ATTENDED VICE CHANCELLOR MIKE HAYNIE’S PRESS CONFERENCE ON SYRACUSE’S STEPS MOVING FORWARD REGARDING THIS HEALTH EPIDEMIC.
SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY HAS ACTED AND TRANSITIONING CLASSES TO ONLINE STARTING AT THE END OF THE DAY ON FRIDAY. THE VICE-CHANCELLOR AT SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY MIKE HAYNIE SPOKE OUT YESTERDAY THE UNIVERSITIES PLANS MOVING FORWARD AND WHAT PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW.
SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCED THAT AFTER SPRING BREAK CLASSES WILL BE CONTINUING ONLINE UNTIL MARCH 30TH.
VICE CHANCELLOR MIKE HAYNIE ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY THAT ONCE STUDENTS LEAVE FOR SPRING BREAK THE UNIVERSITY DOES NOT WANT THEM COMING BACK UNTIL AT LEAST MARCH 31ST.
” WHEN STUDENTS LEAVE FOR SPRING BREAK, RETURNING TO SYRACUSE. THE IDEA OF TRANSITIONING TO ONLINE EDUCATION. INHERENT ON THAT IDEA STUDENTS WILL NOT BE RETURNING TO THEIR DORMITORIES ONCE THEY LEAVE”
AT THE END OF THE BREAK WHEN STUDENTS ARE THINKING ABOUT PACKING, THEY NEED TO BE PREPARED WHEN PACKING.
“WE ASK OUR STUDENTS THAT THEY THINK DIFFERENTLY WHEN THEY HEAD HOME FOR BREAK. POTENTIALLY ABOUT PACKING AND GOING HOME FOR BREAK, THEY TAKE THEM ALL THE THINGS THEY NEED THEIR ACADEMIC STATUS WHEN THEY LEAVE. TEXTBOOKS, LAPTOPS, DEVICES, AND CERTAINLY ANYTHING ELSE THEY WANT TO HAVE WITH THEM. TO GIVE IN THERE IS MORE OF A POTENTIAL THAT THEY WILL BE AWAY FROM CAMPUS AN EXTENDED PERIOD THEY WILL BE LONGER THAN SPRING BREAK.”) (TRACK 3)
DURING THE BREAK THE UNIVERSITY WILL BE WORKING WITH PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICIALS ON WHAT STEPS TO MOVE
“AGAIN, AFFECTIVE END OF DAY ON FRIDAY AND THRO
ALL UPDATES REGARDING THE CORNAVIRUS AND SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY WILL BE UPDATED ON SYRACUSE.EDU/CORNAVIRUS
WE WILL CONTINUING COVERING THIS STORY AS IT DEVELOPS
MORNINGS ON THE HILL MICHELLE KNEZOVIC, BACK TO YOU GUYS
WITH NEARLY EVERY NEWS ORGANIZATION COVERING THIS CASE, THERE IS A LOT OF INFORMATION TO PROCESS.
BUT TO BREAK IT DOWN…OUR JILLIAN ANDREWS EXPLAINS SOME MYTHS ABOUT THE CORONAVIRUS.
AS THE FEAR OF COVID-19 CONTINUES TO GROW,
THE CENTERS OF DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION OR “CDC” AND
THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION OR “WHO” ARE TRYING TO MAKE SURE THE PUBLIC HAS THE CORRECT INFORMATION.
ONE MYTH SURROUNDING THE VIRUS IS THAT COLD WEATHER CAN KILL IT.
ACCORDING TO THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION, THIS IS NOT THE CASE.
THIS IS BECAUSE of NO MATTER THE TEMPERATURE OUTSIDE, THE HUMAN BODY REMAINS BETWEEN 97 AND 99 DEGREES.
EVEN IF YOU LIVE IN A REGION EXPERIENCING TEMPERATURES BELOW FREEZING, YOU ARE STILL AT RISK OF CONTRACTING THE VIRUS FROM AN INFECTED PERSON.
CORONAVIRUS IS NOT TRANSMITTED BY MOSQUITOS.
THE C-D-C SAYS THE CORONAVIRUS IS A RESPIRATORY ILLNESS.
THEREFORE, IT IS SPREAD BY DROPLETS PRODUCED BY AN INFECTED PERSON. STAY AWAY FROM INDIVIDUALS THAT ARE SNEEZING OR COUGHING.
EVEN IF AN INDIVIDUAL IS CLEARED HEALTHY BY A THERMAL SCANNER, IT DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE NOT INFECTED.
“WHO,” SAYS THAT THERMAL SCANNER WILL DETECT WHETHER SOMEONE HAS A FEVER.
BUT AN INDIVIDUAL CAN BE INFECTED WITHOUT SHOWING SYMPTOMS.
EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT SHOWING SYMPTOMS, YOU CAN STILL SPREAD THE VIRUS.
IT CAN TAKE ANYWHERE FROM TWO TO TEN DAYS TO START EXHIBITING SYMPTOMS.
SOME PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN BECOME INFECTED WITH THE
CORONAVIRUS IF YOUR PACKAGE COMES FROM COUNTRY’S REPORTING CASES OF THE VIRUS.
ACCORDING TO “WHO”, THIS IS NOT SOMETHING PEOPLE NEED TO BE SERIOUSLY CONCERNED WITH.
IT WOULD BE HIGHLY UNLIKELY THAT THE VIRUS COULD SURVIVE ALL THE DIFFERENT CONDITIONS DURING TRAVEL.
IF YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT A SURFACE, USE DISINFECTING SPRAY AND WASH YOUR HANDS AFTER CONTACT.
ANOTHER TOPIC PEOPLE ARE GETTING CONFUSED ABOUT IS THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN “QUARANTINE” AND “ISOLATION.”
ISOLATION IS FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE TESTED POSITIVE FOR THE DISEASE AND ARE CONTAGIOUS.
QUARANTINE IS FOR HEALTHY PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO THE INFECTION BUT HAVE NOT YET TESTED POSITIVE.
FOR UP-TO-DATE NUMBERS ON THOSE INFECTED
INCLUDING MAPS OF INFECTED REGIONS,
YOU CAN VISIT THE CENTERS OF DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION OR THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION WEBSITES.
STUDENTS HAVE BEEN OCCUPYING CROUSE-HINDS HALL FOR 23 DAYS.
LAST WEEK STUDENTS SPENT 14 HOURS NEGOTIATING WITH CAMPUS LEADERS.
MORNING’S ON THE HILL’S ALYSSA LYONS WENT TO #NOTAGAINSU’S PRESS CONFERENCE YESTERDAY.
ALYSSA GOOD MORNING. I KNOW A TON OF INFORMATION WAS SAID YESTERDAY, A LOT TO PROCESS…BUT WHAT CAN YOU TELL US?
GOOD MORNING
YESTERDAY NOTAAGAIN SU
CALLED FOR THE ADMINISTRATION TO ACKNOWLEDGE WS AND FOR THE ADMINISTRATION TO ISSUE A PUBLIC APOLOGY.
3 NON-NEGOTIABLES:
1. DPS USED FORCE DENIED BASIC NECESSITIES
2. ACADEMIC PARDON TO THOSE WHO WERE SUSPENDED: OFFICIALLY LIFTED
MARCH 4
3. ALLOW FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS TO RETURN TO THEIR POSITIONS AFTER THEY’RE FINISHED WITH THEIR STRIKE.
THEIR LAWYER, CIVIL RIGHTS LAWYER RONALD MCGUIRE CALLED THIS ACT OF CIVIL RIGHTS VIOLATION.
SO FAR SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT FOR ENROLLMENT AND STUDENT EXPERIENCE
AMANDA NICHOLSON ALREADY ADMITTED HER INVOLVEMENT SEPERATE FROM THE UNIVERSITY.
AS FOR THE NEGOTIATIONS, STUDENTS SAY THEY’RE NOT REALLY SURE WHAT
HAPPENED DURING THOSE NEGOTIATIONS, ACCORDING TO NOTAGAINSU THERE
HAS BEEN NO CONFIRMATION OF WHAT WAS AGREED UPON DURING THOSE 4 DAYS OF NEGOTIATIONS.
CENTRAL NEW YORK’S MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION CELEBRATED 35 YEARS OVER THE WEEKEND.
WISH RECEIVERS CAME BACK TO SHARE MEMORIES OF WHAT THIS
ORGANIZATION HAS DONE FOR THEIR FAMILIES, ESPECIALLY THIS ONE, TAKE A LOOK.
THE MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION OF CENTRAL NEW YORK SERVES HUNDREDS OF WISH KIDS EVERY YEAR.
BUT THEY’D RATHER NOT. PRESIDENT AND C-E-O DIANE KUPPERMAN SAYS THEY WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO SHUT THEIR DOORS ONE DAY, BECAUSE ONE DAY, THEY HOPE TO HAVE A CURE.
COMING UP HERE ON MORNINGS ON THE HILL…
OUR SYRACUSE MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM STARTS THEIR ACC TOURNAMENT PLAY TONIGHT.
ALSO COMING UP… WE TAKE YOU LIVE IN GREENSBORO AT THE MEN’S ACC BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT.
BELIEVE ME, YOU WILL NOT WANT TO MISS THIS. SO, STAY WITH US RIGHT HERE ON MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
OUR SYRACUSE MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM STARTS THEIR POSTSEASON PLAY TONIGHT IN THE ACC TOURNAMENT.
THE ORANGE EARNED The FIRST-ROUND BYE AND WILL TAKE ON THE NORTH CAROLINA TARHEELS.
SYRACUSE FELL SHORT TO UNC IN THE REGULAR SEASON, LOSING 92-79 IN THE LAST MEN’S BASKETBALL GAME IN THE DOME.
WITH A SIXTH PLACE FINISH IN A WEAK ACC, A LOSS TONIGHT WOULD ELIMINATE ALL HOPES OF SYRACUSE MAKING THE NCAA TOURNAMENT.
PLAYERS TO LOOK OUT FOR IS SYRACUSE’S ELIJAH HUGHES WHO WON THE ACC REGULAR SEASON SCORING TITLE, AVERAGING 18.8 POINTS A GAME AND UNC’S POINT GUARD COLE ANTHONY.
BOTH PLAYERS WERE SELECTED FIRST TEAM ALL-ACC.
A BIG WEEK FOR SYRACUSE BASKETBALL INDEED…SO BIG THAT OUR SPORTS
REPORTERS COLE JOHNSON AND ROB BRUIN HIT THE ROAD WITH THE ORANGE.
BOTH ARE life FROM GREENSBORO COLISEUM AND LOOKS LIKE HE HAS SOME
OF THE BEST SEATS IN THE HOUSE. COLE WHAT’S THE SCOOP FOR ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED CONFERENCE TOURNAMENTS OF THE YEAR?
WITH CORONAVIRUS BEING THE TOP STORY WORLDWIDE, HAS THERE BEEN ANY WORD ON THE IMPACT ON THE ACC TOURNAMENT AND TONIGHT’S GAME?
THANKS, COLE, FOR THE UPDATE.
TIP OFF FOR THE GAME IS AT NINE PM.
CONTINUING WITH SPORTS…
ONE SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY FAN NEVER MISSES A GAME, AND THEIR EFFORTS AREN’T UNNOTICED BY AN ATHLETE WHO GOES THE EXTRA MILE FOR THEM.
LINDSAY EASTWOOD, A NEWHOUSE GRADUATE WILL BE GRADUATING THIS YEAR.
TRACEY SAYS SHE WILL BE MISS LINDSAY BUT IS EXCITED FOR HER NEW JOURNEY TO BEGIN.
AND FOR TRACEY, SHE WILL BE STUDYING AT SU NEXT YEAR.
STICKING WITH WOMENS SPORTS, BAILEY WHAT IS GOING ON WITH ORANGE
TENNIS
IN SPORTS WE CAN BE CAPTIVATED BY WHAT WE SEE ON THE FIELD, IN THE GYM,
AND ON THE COURT. BUT A MAJORITY OF THE MAGIC IS MADE BEHIND THE
SCENES. THIS SYRACUSE WOMENS TENNIS TEAM HAS COMPETED AT A HIGH LEVEL IN WHAT IS ARGUABLY THE TOUGHEST COLLEGIATE CONFERENCE, THE ACC.
BUT WHAT HAS BEEN IMPRESSIVE ABOUT THIS TEAM IS CHEMISTRY.
ESPECIALLY SINCE ONE OF THEIR COACHES ARRIVED IN CENTRAL NEW YORK…JUST A FEW MONTHS AGO.
JENNIFER MEREDITH BOUNCED AROUND COACHING STAFFS FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS BETWEEN MIZZOU AND UCONN. BUT THIS PAST SUMMER…
“SYRACUSE HAS ESTABLISHED THEMSELVES AS A TOP 20 PROGRAM AND I WANTED TO LEARN HOW
COACH LIMAN HAS DONE IT…BY SOME OF THE BEST.”
A FORMER SEC STANDOUT OF HER OWN AT TENNESSEE
“HER WORK ETHIC SPEAKS FOR ITSELF…….AND COACHED AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL AS WELL”
ALTHOUGH MEREDITH HAS SIX MONTHS OF ORANGE TENNIS UNDER HER BELT
” FOR ME I TRY TO BE A PLAYER’S COACH, I WANT THEM TO KNOW I WILL ALWAYS HAVE THEIR BACK…AND WHEN THEY NEED ME THE MOST.”
ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT SPENDING TIME WITH COACH MEREDITH
WAS HER PASSION ABOUT THE PLAYERS. A TRUE PLAYERS COACH. YOU CAN
CATCH THE ORANGE IN ACTION THIS FRIDAY AS NO. 9 GEORGIA TECH VISITS DRUMLINS WITH the FIRST BALL AT 3 P.M.
BUT ALLIE, ITS NOT JUST TENNIS SEASON…THERE IS SOMETHING BREWING DOWN THE STREET OVER AT LE MOYNE.
YES! SO, WE KNOW HOW BIG LACROSSE IS AT S-U AND CENTRAL NEW YORK. I TOOK A STEP OUT OF THE DOME AND ENDED UP IN OUR BACKYARD, LE MOYNE, WHERE ONE YOUNG WOMAN IS ALREADY MAKING A BIG IMPACT.
IT WASN’T TOO LONG-AGO LIZ BEEVILLE WAS ON THE FIELD IN HER PLAYERS SHOES… OR CLEATS. A FORMER COLLEGE LACROSSE STAR HERSELF AND HAVING APPEARED IN FOUR NATIONAL SEMI-FINAL GAMES DURING HER TIME IN CORTLAND, BEVILLE KNEW SHE DIDN’T WANT THOSE THRILLING MOMENTS TO END.
” I THINK REALLY WHEN I GOT TO CORTLAND AND WE HAD A LOT OF SUCCESS AND I WAS ABLE TO SEE THAT AS A STUDENT-ATHLETE… COACHING WAS ALREADY IN THE BACK OF MY MIND AS A POTENTIAL CAREER. I THINK WHEN YOU HAVE THAT SUCCESS AS A STUDENT-ATHLETE, YOU NEVER WANT THAT TO GO AWAY.”
BEVILLE PURSUED THAT CAREER, SPENDING HER FIRST FIVE YEARS AFTER GRADUATION IN DIFFERENT ASSISTANT COACHING POSITIONS. FROM MUHLENBERG COLLEGE, BACK TO CORTLAND, OUT TO COLORADO, BACK TO COLGATE. BUT NOW AT JUST 27 YEARS OLD, SHE’S TAKEN OVER LE MOYNE’S DIVISION 2 WOMEN’S LACROSSE PROGRAM.
“I THINK THE BEST THING ABOUT LE MOYNE WITH THE TRANSITION HAVE BEEN THE GIRLS ON THE TEAM.
THEY’VE has JUST BEEN OPEN TO EVERYTHING AND THAT’S MADE MY JOB A LOT EASIER.”
SENIOR GOALKEEPER HANNAH GEORGE SAYS COACHING CHANGES ARE STRESSFUL, BUT THE TEAM HAS
REMAINED POSITIVE.
“I THINK SENIOR YEAR COMING IN, YOU’RE USED TO WHAT YOU HAD BEFORE – THE PAST THREE YEARS AND THEN YOU GET A CHANGE AND IT’S KIND OF DIFFERENT AND IT’S KIND OF SCARY BUT OUR WHOLE SENIOR CLASS I THINK WE’RE EXCITED about A CHANGE.”
AS FOR WHAT’S NEXT FOR BEVILLE AND HER TEAM, SHE SAYS THEIR GOAL IS TO WIN THE NORTHEAST 10 CHAMPIONSHIP AND THEN EVENTUALLY A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.
“THE BIGGEST THING THAT WE KEEP SAYING IS JUST TO WIN THE NOW. WE WANT TO WIN EVERY DAY AND FOCUS ON ONE GOAL AT A TIME… I THINK IF WE DO THAT, WE’LL BE ABLE TO TAKE CARE OF THE TEAM’S BIGGER GOALS.”
BUT BY THE WAY, GEORGE DESCRIBES HER NEW COACH, THOSE BIGGER GOALS SEEM LIKE THEY’LL SOON BE A REALITY.
“TENACIOUS. A GO GETTER. SHE’S EXCITED TO SEE WHAT SHE CAN DO WITH THE PROGRAM AND SHE KNOWS THAT WE CAN PERFORM, AND SHE WANTS THE BEST FOR US, AND WE WANT THE BEST FOR HER TOO. AND WE WANNA WIN THAT NATTY.”
THE TEAM WON THEIR FIRST GAME AGAINST MERCYHURST 19 TO 2. AND THEY’RE SEASON RECORD RIGHT NOW IS 3 AND OH.
STILL TO COME HERE ON MORNINGS ON THE HILL…
WE WILL TELL YOU ABOUT THE UNIQUE WAY SOME MEMBERS OF CONGRESS ARE TRYING TO STAY HEALTHY DESPITE THE CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK.
STAY WITH US–THAT STORY AND MORE JUST AHEAD.
THE ATTENDING PHYSICIAN AT THE CLOSED-DOOR MEETING SUGGESTED
THE LAWMAKERS SHOULD GIVE THE LIVE LONG AND PROSPER SIGN. BETTER
KNOWN AS THE SPOCK SIGN FROM THE “STAR TREK” FRANCHISE… THE IDEA
WOULD BE TO PREVENT EXPOSURE BY ELIMINATING PERSON TO PERSON CONTACT.
SEVERAL LAWMAKERS IN WASHINGTON HAVE DECIDED TO SELFQUARANTINE TO LIMIT THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS ON CAPITAL HILL.
