The friend, Jorge Sanchez, told WSOC in Charlotte, NC, that the still-unnamed victim was walking away from a fight when the other student pulled out a gun and shot him.
Police say they have the gun, but have not revealed the type of weapon or how the student got it.
The shooting occurred at Butler High School in Matthews, North Carolina early this morning. The victim passed away around 11:00 AM while battling injuries at a local hospital.
Police say the suspect, who was also not named, is in custody.
Controversy continued after the shooting, as the school decided to continue classes after the shooting occured. Students were allowed to leave, but could choose to stay.
Activists on social media have called out the school for keeping students in the same building where a horrific trauma occured. The school responded by saying that they wanted to give students a place to be if they could not go home, and that they were allowed to leave if they chose to.
