JAMES CORRIGAN: This is your NCC news update on this Thursday, July 23 2020. I’m James Corrigan, and here’s what’s happening.
Senate Republicans announced yesterday that they have reached an agreement with the White House to propose a new coronavirus relief bill. The trillion dollar plan is expected to include unemployment benefit extension, but treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin says it’ll only go so far.
MNUCHIN: “We’re not going to pay people more to stay home than to work. So we’re looking at something that looks like a 70% wage replacement. ”
CORRIGAN: The proposal has alienated some Republican Senators who say the price tag is too high.
New York City mayor Bill de Blasio is fighting back against President Trump’s proposed plan to send federal law enforcement agents to the city.
DE BLASIO: “If we see these federal officers on our streets, then we will see the Trump administration in court.”
CORRIGAN: This after federal agents in Portland tear gassed a crowd of peaceful protesters last night, including the city’s mayor.
The Syracuse Orange football team is back on the gridiron for the first time today, kicking off a planned six week training camp. The players are under heavy restrictions, as described by senior defensive lineman Josh Black.
BLACK: “It started off about eight people in a pod. These are the only people you could make contact with. So we worked out with this pod, they were the only people we could hang out with, but we still have a social distance at the same time.”
CORRIGAN: Governor Cuomo announced yesterday fans would be barred from college sports events this year.
Cloudy today, with a 50 percent chance of rain. High of 84, going down to 66 tonight.
