Frank Salerno – Good afternoon Central New York, today is September 16th, 2020, I’m Frank Salerno, and this is your NCC News Brief.
Today, governor Andrew cuomo revealed that New York coronavirus cases are back below a 1% infection rate. Cuomo said this will allow New York to properly manage economic activity, such small businesses and restaurants, as long as the 1% maximum is in place.
Andrew Cuomo – “Yesterday being over 1%, I didn’t sleep last night. You do not want to be over that 1% for any prolonged period of time.”
Salerno – The governor also reiterated that the state is still not in a safe spot to begin full reopening.
Today, Syracuse University announced 13 new active COVID-19 cases amongst students, bringing the total to 23. These are the most active cases the University has seen at once since reopening in August. The number of students in quarantine also increased by 23.
In an email from University officials blamed the recent spike in cases on students leaving Central New York and bringing the infection back with them. The school warned of possible suspension or expulsion for anyone who chooses to ignore New York State and Syracuse University travel guidelines.
Uninsured New Yorkers can now enroll in state health insurance coverage through the end of the year. Thisreplaced the previous September 15th deadline. New York State Health officials say the decision comes out of fear that people without health benefits would avoid seeking COVID-19 testing or medical care. More than 8,000 new yorkers have already signed up for state issued health insurance during the pandemic.
Hurricane Sally made landfall around 5:00 am Wednesday near the Florida/Alabama border. The storm is expected to bring 35 inches of rain to the coast, severely damaging houses and trapping residents. More than 40 people were rescued near Pensacola already and there are thousands more estimated who will need to evacuate in the coming days.
The Denver Nuggets and the Los Angeles Lakers will go head to head in the Western Conference Finals starting on Friday night. No matter the result of the series, Syracuse fans will have something to look forward to. Either Jerami Grant of the Nuggets or Dion Waiters of the Lakers will see their team advance to the NBA Finals, marking the first time in 40 years an Orange alum will battle for the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy. The last Syracuse player to do so? Marty Byrnes in 1980, when his Philadelphia 76ers defeated the LA Lakers.
