SYRACUSE, N.Y.(NCC NEWS) – Lawn signs around the University Hill and Westcott neighborhoods of Syracuse have been going missing. Through a forum on the Nextdoor app many residents have complained about the issue. Peter Moller, a resident in the University Hill Neighborhood, exclaimed that he does not know why they are being taken.
“I had two Biden Harris signs and there was one right there and one morning we came out and it was gone,” Moller said.
Moller also has a doorbell camera installed, but it did not deter the thieves. Moller is using the next two signs he puts out as a test.
“I’m putting these two new signs out as a test to see what will happen if they disappear again, I will set up a camera out there at night and try to catch the villain,” Moller said.
Other political signs are being swiped as well. University Hill resident Tula Goenka has had signs she bought from the Syracuse Cultural Workers store taken.
“It’s such a lovey dovey sign, we are all one and be kind and social justice, I don’t know why people find it offensive,” Goenka said.
At the Syracuse Cultural Workers Store, Show/Festival Coordinator & Administrative Assistant Janet Flores-Rodriguez has heard of people taking them but hopes that it is not due to their message.
“It sucks that signs are going missing,” Rodriguez said. “I want to believe that they are not going missing because it is someone who doesn’t agree with the message removing them.”
There are plenty of other items that people can purchase at the store that will not be easily taken from a lawn. This includes shirts, pins, tote bags and mugs. However, signs are the most popular. According to a the Syracuse Cultural Workers store, the signs have been the number one seller.
While the residents have not reported the signs stealing to the police, if the stealing continues, Goenka said she might stop buying more.
“I think at some point I may give up I don’t know,” Goenka said.
