ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. (NCC News) — Fishing season is set to kick off Thursday, as New York prepares for opening day.
This will be New York’s first trout season with the state’s new regulations in place, which were finalized last week.
Governor Andrew Cuomo announced in a statement Monday that these new regulations include measures like increased stocking of fish and improved access for anglers of all ages.
The 50-page document includes further new measures:
- The state now differentiates between stocked and wild trout, dividing them into five categories based on size, quality and accessibility of habitat.
- The state’s new year-round catch-and-release season will commence after the regular season ends on Oct. 15.
- A three-year study will be conducted to ensure the new plan doesn’t interfere with natural trout production.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has released an interactive map with specific information about each fishing location.
