Huge increase in early voter turnout

RAVEN BRINK: This year the Onondaga Board of Elections saw an increase in the number of early voters compared to 2020. With the primary election tomorrow our reporter Janelle Pottinger is in the newsroom to tell us what people are voting on.

JANELLE POTTINGER: Officials at the Onondaga County Board of Elections says there was a 235-percent increase in the number of early voters this year. Tomorrow you can vote for governor and lieutenant governor along with the republican GOP gubernatorial candidate

POTTINGER: New York’s primary voting starts tomorrow and the number of early voters was over two-thousand. this is a 235-perecent increase from the 2020 presidential primary. According to Onondaga County Elections commissioner Dustin Czarny, the number of early voters this year exceeded expectations.

DUSTIN CZARNY: It was a successful early voting we are going to see how many of these early voters make up the total vote when we have our primary tomorrow but I think it went really well.

POTTINGER: Czarny says that the turn out for primary elections tend to be low but isn’t sure what to expect this time around. With the current supreme court rulings and their opinions being released, Czarny says time will tell what affect this will have on voter turnout.

CZARNY: With these Supreme Court rulings energizing over 50% of America, I think we’re going to see some higher turnout and higher registration but time will tell… it’s a long way until November.

POTTINGER: This primary is broken up into two different elections, one tomorrow and the other on August 23rd. Czarny says the one tomorrow is crucial for the gubernatorial race.

CZARNY: Tomorrow Democrats are voting on governor and lieutenant governor, Republicans are voting on governor then they have a small town committee in the town of Pompey.

POTTINGER: The ballot will be relatively short with only three democratic candidates to choose from for both positions and four republican GOP candidates.

POTTINGER: The polls will be open from six to nine across New York and the general election is on November 8th

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News)— The polls will be open tomorrow for voters to vote in the New York state primary election. This comes two days after early voting ended on Sunday.

According to officials at the Onondaga County Board of Elections, the number of early voters was more than 2,000. This is a 235% increase from the 2020 presidential primary.

Onondaga County Elections Commissioner Dustin Czarny said the number of early voters exceeded his expectations.

“It was a successful early voting, we are going to see how many of these early voters make up the total vote when we have our primary tomorrow but I think it went really well,” Czarny said.

Voter turnout for primary elections tend to be low but Czarny said he isn’t sure what to expect this time around. With the current Supreme Court rulings and their opinions being released, Czarny says it’s too soon to determine what affect they will have on voter turnout.
