SYRACUSE N.Y. (NCC News)— A local bakery is looking to change a couple’s wedding day through a free cake.
Rebecca Riley, owner of Peace, Love, and Cupcakes, says while scrolling through Facebook she came across a post and knew she had to step in and do something about it.
A couple in Pennsylvania, getting married in September, claims they had their wedding cake reservation taken away from them when the caterer found out they were lesbians. The couple’s post suggested the cakemaker claimed same sex marriage is against their religious beliefs.
Upon seeing this Riley took matters into her own hands. Her bakery opened up in the middle of the pandemic. She is used to challenges.
“I offered to do it for free and deliver it to them,” Riley said. “I had to fight their hate with my love.”
Riley has received a tremendous amount of support on Facebook from people all over, commending her for what she has done. With her bakery being less than three hours away from the wedding location, Riley was more than ecstatic to help.
This isn’t the first time Riley and staff had done something in the wake of a controversial topic. During Derek Chauvin’s conviction, Peace, Love, and Cupcakes made Black Lives Matter cookies. Supportive customers lined up around the corner.
The Peace, Love, and Cupcakes bakery is located at 121 W. Fayette St. and is welcoming to all people. Their emphasis of “love is love” is planted right on their front door.
