ONONDAGA COUNTY, NY (NCC NEWS) – It is six days after the polls closed around the country, yet some big races nationally are yet to be decided.
And here in the local Central New York area, that is no different. Three local elections still remain too close to call.
First is the race in the 22nd Congressional district. Republican Brandon Williams leads Democrat Francis Conole by 1.6% or nearly 4,000 votes, with over 96% in.
But there are still a lot of outstanding votes. According to a statement from Onondaga County Democratic Elections Commissioner Dustin Czarny, there are still 3,600 ballots still to be counted between absentee and affidavit ballots, and an unknown quantity of ballots that were rejected by the vote counting machine that need to be counted by hand still left to be tallied.
The race for the 50th district in New York State is even tighter. Republican challenger Rebecca Shiroff leads incumbent John Manion by just 400 votes or .04%. This comes with at least 950 absentee ballots to be counted, and a known number of affidavit and rejected ballots left uncounted.
Also, if that race ends within .05% distance between the two candidates, then every vote will have to be re-counted by hand, which is over 120,000 ballots.
Lastly, the race for the Onondaga county sheriff is still not called. Although Republican Esteban Gonzalez needs 80-90% of the outstanding vote to come back and win, he says he will not concede to Democrat Toby Shelley until every vote is counted.
The polls in New York state closed last Tuesday. And while a lot of elections have been called state wide there is still many outstanding in the state including three here in the local cny area.
The first is the race for the seat in 22nd congressional district which includes Onondaga, Madison, Oneida, and just a little bit of Oswego county and it paces the republican Brandon Williams with the democrat Francis Conloe.
And with over 95 percent of the votes in the Williams holds a 1.6% lead of just over 4,000 votes. But there are 3 different forms of votes still outstanding. According to Onondaga county democratic elections commissioner Dustin Czary there are still 1700 absentee ballots,1900 affidavit, and an unknow number of ballets that were rejected by the vote counting machine still to be tallied. So while it is going to be an uphill battle for Conole to flip this seat down by 4000 votes it is still doable epically with the fact that more democratic absentee ballots were commissioned than republicans.
The second race in question is one of the tightest races in the state for the seat in the 50th district of the New York state senate, which covers this area around Syracuse.
Right now incumbent John Mannion trails republican challenger Rebecca Shiroff by less than 400 votes. With 950 absentee ballots still out there and an unknow number of affidavit and rejected ballets to be counted. And here is a key for this race if it ends within .5% and it is at .4% right now, every single ballot has to be hand counted so over 120,000 votes and if that is the case, don’t expect to see these results in for a while.
Finally, the race for the Onagdoga county sheriff is still outstanding. Democrat Toby Shelley holds a nearly three thousand vote lead. But republican Esteban Gonzalez said he is not going to con seed until every vote is counted. He needs somewhere between 80-90 percent of the outstanding vote to win.
