Syracuse City High School Graduation Rates Decrease 2018

New York State High School Graduation rates are in and the Syracuse City School District rates have decreased from 60.5 to 58.3 percent.

According to records released by the New York State Education Department, High School graduation rates slightly increased from 80.2 in 2017 to 80.4 percent in 2018.

This data was collected from the number of students who started 9th grade in 2014 and graduated in June 2018. The data also includes the number of students who missed June graduation, but were still enrolled.

Syracuse City School District average is well below the New York state average and even lower than neighboring villages and towns in Onondaga County.
Within Upstate New York alone Public Service Leadership Academy – Fowler High School had the fifth lowest graduation rates this past year. Their graduation rate was 46%.

Following Fowler High School, other Syracuse City School District schools also led in lowest graduation rates in Upstate, NY. Henninger High School Ranked #13 with a 56 percent graduation rates, Corcoran High School ranking #15 at a 60 percent graduation rate and Nottingham ranking #16 at 61 percent of students graduating after 4 years.

Among the top 50 High Schools with the highest graduation rates, no High School in Onondaga County was not listed.

For many years High School graduation rates have been ignored and critics argue that High School Graduation rates are not a measure of one’s success or how well one will do in college.

Of course it does not measure how well on will do in college or does it correlate with how soon the student will graduate college, but majority of Americans do not have a college education.

According to the American Council on Education, the New York State Government has been placing a high level of importance on Graduation rates to target the persistent trends and gaps in college enrollment and graduations rates between low-income Americans and their affluent peers.

The Syracuse City has high concentration of poverty and crimes rates, and it intersects within the success city’s education system.

Each year cities have the opportunity to make a change within their education system. The next graduation rates records will be released in 2019.
