Syracuse, N.Y. (NCC News) — Syracuse has been named one of the top ten cities that Generation Z is moving to.
Generation Z, otherwise known as “Gen Z,” includes people ranging from ages 18 to 24-years-old. Ranked number seven, in between Nashville and Philadelphia, the city of Syracuse is a now a hotspot for this young demographic.
Ozzie Crisalli, a partner at Syracuse Realty Group in North Syracuse, believes that easy transportation and a relatively reasonable cost of living could be what is attracting Gen Z to the city.
“Unlike cities one, two and three, it’s easy to get around [Syracuse]. You can be on one side of the county in 20 minutes,” Crisalli said. “The cost of living is relatively affordable and I think that Upstate New York in general is a great place to live.”
Crisalli does not predict Gen Z to be moving into the Syracuse suburbs anytime soon, but suggests that this younger demographic is drawn to the urban areas of Syracuse where there is action, activity and walkability.
Another element that could be causing Gen Z to relocate to the Salt City is the job opportunities. While the integration of Micron, the computer chip plant coming to Syracuse, is creating many new jobs, this influx of Gen Z has been happening before the introduction of Micron. Crisalli attributes that to the variety of blue and white collar jobs offered in the city, as well as credible education and medical facilities in the area.
In terms of the future, Crisalli believes Syracuse could be seeing a continuous stream of Gen Z coupled with a potentially higher standard of living.
“I think the influx of Gen Z … you have a new energy. Landlords and property owners will be motivated to improve the properties to help this new demographic that is coming in because based on their age, they could be here for the long run.”
