By Michael Furnari SYRACUSE, N.Y. (N.C.C. News)– Thursday is Valentine’s Day, and many Syracuse residents will be showing their love to those closest to them. Some do this through gifts, others through simple gestures like a bouquet of roses. As procrastinating Syracuse residents scramble to find gifts for their partners, florists are waiting to bail them out with ready-made fresh flowers. The week leading up to Valentine’s Day can be the most profitable time of year for florists, who can receive hundreds of orders a day in the days prior.
Reports have shown that Valentine’s Day spending has been decreasing recently. For reasons yet to be made clear, people around the country are spending less money during the holiday. If this were true, it could be troubling for florists, who get massive amounts of business on Valentine’s Day.
The managers of Syracuse flower shop Sam Rao Florist say that their business has been as good as ever “The number of guys that have just been coming in the last couple of days is amazing, it’s guy after guy, so I found that hard to believe when they say that about Syracuse.”
Syracuse received the unfortunate honor of being named the worst city in America for dating. Local florist Joe Italiano of Mary Jane Dougall Flowers amusingly commiserated with the plight of Syracuse singles “Well, being a single guy I guess it’s bearing true with me, other than that, I do see a lot of customers buying flowers.”
National rankings and reports may be casting a negative light on romance in Syracuse, but if you ask local florists, it seems that love is healthy and blooming all over the city.
