Hello and welcome to the NCC News podcast. We’re your hosts. I’m Maddie Mustion, and I’m Emily Shiroff. Today is June 8th. Here are some of the stories we’re following today on NCC News. The land that Onondaga County purchased for the new aquarium build may be contaminated. Syracuse.com reported that contractors found volatile organic compounds five to seven feet below the ground at the site.

The city is still investigating this, and we will provide further updates when they arise. June is Pride Month and the Syracuse Gay and Lesbian Choir performed at the Syracuse Pride Flag Raising event. Polina Shemanova talked to one of the members about what the choir means to them. I get to hang out with a bunch of awesome gay people and sing.

The choir accepts all people, regardless of gender identity, and creates an inclusive group that encourages people to be themselves through song. Well, for those worried about the air quality, we’re down to 136, which is almost three times lower than yesterday. The rain is going to be on and off, so make sure you keep your umbrella handy. Thank you for that optimistic update, Polina. Now looking at sports, we have Michael Gross joining us. Michael, there are some very exciting events and games happening around the area, specifically the Boxing Hall of Fame inductions.

Tell us about that. Well, Emily, the excitement will have to go inside for the Boxing Hall of Fame induction ceremony. All outdoor activities on the Hall of Fame grounds in Canastota have been moved inside for both today and tomorrow to the Turning Stone Casino showroom. That’ll now be the site for the induction of some of boxing’s very best.

Michael, with the air quality impacting a lot of things around the county, has it impacted sports at all? Well, Maddie, the weather is delaying some of the events closer to home as well. The boys high school lacrosse got moved to Friday for their state semi-finals. Baldwinsville, West Genesee, Jamesville-Dewitt , and Marcellus, the four schools still involved. The coaches have really just said they have to roll with the punches. They will play tomorrow. Thank you for the update on those events, Michael. That’s all for now.
