Valentina- This potential law indicates that retailers should have to be at least 750 feet away from a school or park. Manager of NY Exotic on Marshall Street, Samantha Pitcher, doesn’t disagree.

Pitcher- Honestly I think that’s bad, especially for like elementary, middle school, and high school. It shouldn’t happen anyways.

Valentina – Unfortunately, Pitcher says kids will be served these products no matter what.

Thompson- They’re gonna find one way or another to get it.

Valentina- Regarding the shop she manages, she says,

Pitcher- Our students and our customers daily know that we have we’ll still sell them.

Valentina- The Common Council will discuss the details of the proposed law at a committee meeting on Wednesday at 10 in the morning.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – Mayor Ben Walsh has made a proposal that would limit the amount of tobacco retailers in the area.

The new law would be capped to those who have a valid state license as of the effective date or the law.

Manager of NY Exotic on Marshall Street, Samantha Pitcher, said she doesn’t think this will affect her store at all.

“Our students, our customers, daily know that we have them, we’ll still sell them – besides we do exotic snacks, we’re about to put up a deli in here and make a convenience store in our store,” she said.

So ultimately, the stores that present as corner stores, a place where you can get your daily retail items, may be able to camouflage the fact that they are still selling tobacco.

The Common Council will be discussing the details of the proposed law at a committee meeting Wednesday at 10 a.m.

“There’s going to be a fight,” Pitcher said when asked if this law will be passed.
