SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC NEWS) — Observers enjoyed the second solar eclipse of 2023 on Saturday, but it had a very unique look. Saturday’s eclipse was an annular solar eclipse, which is when the moon doesn’t completely cover the Sun as it’s passing between the Sun and Earth. The visual was like something out of a movie, with what looked like a “Ring of Fire” blazing in the sky.
The eclipse began just after noon, Eastern Time and was only visible for a few minutes at a time in each single location. People all over the country grabbed their eclipse-safe glasses to watch it in person, while NASA live streamed it online.
Kerrville, Texas was a popular spot to watch the eclipse as multiple watch parties were held around the city. J.C. Humphrey was a viewer there and described what he thought while watching the eclipse to KENS 5, “Just a marvel of the universe, you know, the more you look at the universe and look at what’s out there, the more wondrous it is. It’s just absolutely amazing.”
Hundreds of people gathered in Ashland, Oregon as well to enjoy the phenomenon. Ryan and Jessica workman told KDRV that they appreciate how the eclipse provided a break in everyone’s busy lives, “on a day to day basis, people run around and go about their lives, and then to have a moment like this where every single person is focused on one spot in the universe is definitely interesting,” Ryan said, “It kind of slows everyone down.”
Those who weren’t able to witness the event, will have to wait a while. A solar eclipse such as Saturday’s won’t appear again until 2046. Those who watched the sky this past weekend were treated with a beautiful visual that is very rarely seen and is sure to be remembered.
