By Jackson Holzer SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Syracuse University had its annual Remembrance Week to honor the 35 students who lost their lives on Pan-Am Flight 103 on December 21, 1988.
Each year, 35 Seniors are selected to be Remembrance Scholars. These students are chosen through “distinguished scholarship, citizenship, and service to the community.” Dominic Chiappone, 2023 Remembrance Scholar, said this year was different.
“This year in particular, being the 35th anniversary, it’s a time of reflection. It’s a look at the persistence of this program.”
Dominic represented Frederick “Sandy” Phillips. Sandy was a transfer from Arkansas who became the Vice President of student government. He also liked to write poetry and studied Syracuse University’s School of Management.
“I think the best part about Sandy was that he embodied what it meant to be a Syracuse University student.”
