SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — A surprising power outage at Beak and Skiff, one of the region’s most cherished apple orchards, has left visitors and farmers in the dark. This unexpected disruption has thrown the day-to-day operations of the orchard off but has also raised concerns about preserving the bakery and ripe apple crop just as the harvest season is in full swing.
National Grid spokesperson John Miller provided an update on the power outage, explaining that it initially affected 960 residents. He also said that the outage has since escalated, leaving 2,530 power company customers without power. Miller remained optimistic, expressing that Beak and Skiff would recover quickly from this unexpected circumstance.
Customer Tiana Robinson said that Beak and Skiff, a popular apple orchard, relies heavily on electricity.
“So everyone is looking for beverages and food and we can’t keep that warmth up and cool without electricity,” said Robinson.
However, Peter Williams, a visitor, emphasized the critical role electricity plays for the bakery within the orchard.
“The bakery is critically an electric power that would measure the temperatures perfect so you have the proper baked goods. So there is a lot of ways electricity would be used at an apple farm like Beak and Skiff,” said Williams.
General manager Pete Fleckenstein, Director of Fresh Fruit Operations, made it clear that Beak and Skiff was still without power. He also acknowledged the financial toll on the business. However, Fleckenstein expressed confidence that Beak and Skiff would resolve the situation soon and couldn’t wait to see the orchard back in full swing.
