MOVING INTO NOVEMBER, GREEN LAKES FOOT TRAFFIC USUALLY SLOWS DOWN. BUT NOT THIS WEEK.

A REGULAR TO THE GREEN LAKES, BROUGHT HER TWO GRANDCHILDREN TODAY, WITH A HIGH OF 75 DEGREES, SHE COULDN’T RESIST.

ESPECIALLY IN OCTOBER, WHEN IT’S 70 DEGREES YOU GOTTA TAKE ADVANTAGE OF STUFF LIKE THIS

I SPOKE WITH ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATOR KATIE MULLVERHILL WHO SAYS THE PARKING LOTS HAVE BEEN FILLING UP HERE IN GREEN LAKES AND THE TRAILS HAVE BEEN GETTING PACKED WITH THE WARMER WEATHER WE’RE HAVING THIS OCTOBER.

AND THOUGH PEOPLE MIGHT NOT THINK OF THE GREEN LAKES WHEN SUMMER COMES TO AN END, THERE IS SOMETHING TO DO IN ALL OF THE SEASONS.

MULLVERHILL SAYS THERE ARE SOME BENEFITS OF COMING IN THE OFF SEASON.

THE PARKS A LOT QUIETER THIS TIME OF YEAR SO YOU CAN FEEL A LITTLE MORE SECLUDED OUT IN NATURE. AND THEN THE OTHER REALLY BIG THING THATS NICE IN THE OFF SEASON IS THAT WE DON’T CHARGE THE CAR LOAD ENTRY FEE SO THE PARKS OPEN FOR FREE MOST OF THE YEAR.

IF YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN TO THE GREEN LAKES, HIKER JANICE VITBERG HAS SOMETHING TO SAY TO YOU!

THIS IS A PLACE YOU HAVE TO SHARE WITH YOUR FRIENDS, YOU HAVE TO SHARE WITH YOUR FAMILY. YOU WANT OTHER PEOPLE TO EXPIERIENCE THE BEAUTY AND PRESTINE OF THIS AREA. AND SO IT’S A SHAREABLE SPOT.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC NEWS) –  The first week of October in Central New York had been in the 80’s, but was expected to be the last of it. The norm of October weather, ranging from 50 to 60 degrees, stayed consistent for the rest of the month. That is until this last week.

At the end of October, the temperature spiked to a high 70’s. Residents of Onondaga county were surprised, but more than happy to soak in the sun.

With the temperature rise, the opportunity for people to visit Green Lakes State Park was not passed up. The parking lot was full, the trails were being hiked and the new playground was being used.

Environmental educator, Katie Mullverhill, spoke about the 20 beautiful miles of hiking trails that are open all year round. She also said that in the off season, there is no car load entry fee so anyone can come in for free!

Although the boat rentals and beaches are closed, Mullverhill said it can make the experience that much more special by being able to be secluded in nature.

“Then once the snow gets here, we get to have lots of winter activities like cross country skiing and snow shoeing so, there really is something you can do in every season here,” Mullverhill said.

While Green Lakes does have regulars who come every single day, Mullverhill says there are also people who walk in the door just as frequently saying its their first time at the park.

An avid hiker and grandmother brought her two grandchildren to enjoy the park and a picnic. She said this was a perfect day to get the kids out of the house again.

“Especially in October, when it’s 70 degrees, you gotta take advantage of stuff like this.” she said.

A second time visitor after three years, Janice Vitberg, said she just had to come back and bring a friend to share it with.

“This is a place you have to share with your friends, you have to share with your family,” she said.
