SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News)—Central New York native and Democrat Tony Malavenda spent over one million dollars on his campaign for county executive in a contested race between him and Republican incumbent Ryan McMahon.
Malavenda says it’s because he wants to change the community he grew up in.
In order to enact that change, he says the voices of those who are struggling need to be heard.
“They need to participate. Not just be tokens of the discussions but actually participate and have real, honest to god input in the decision making. I don’t believe I have a monopoly on truth, no one does,” said Malavenda.
Attack ads have been flying between the two candidates, and McMahon said that Malavenda “has a sick obsession with trying to distract the public from what’s relevant.” Malavenda vehemently dispelled the arguments against him.
“They’re crazy, they’re cartoons. They’re caricatures of lies they’re so bad. I’m someone who has always played by the rules.”
The winner of the race will be revealed on Tuesday night.
