A New DPS Office Arrives at Marshall Street A New DPS Office Arrives at Marshall Street

Marshall Street is a long time unofficial hangout spot for Syracuse University students, with visits to Marshall Street mall and Popeyes very common with students at the University. Now, Syracuse University has announced the addition of a new DPS sub-station located on the corner of South Crouse Avenue and Marshall Street. Insomnia Cookies employee Sam Stavrakos notes some of the incidences that he has dealt with while working at Insomnia.

Sam: “There’s not really a lot of people that work at Insomnia, two to three people at a time so it can be kind of stressful just with that in itself. Sometimes it can get out of hand, sometimes people will get impatient, you know, bad people so it definitely gets out of hand, just not a good environment.”

Students can expect to see more DPS patrol cars in the area as well as more officers on foot during the late nights at Marshall Street. For insomnia cookies employee Sam Stavrakos that added sense of security is pivotal for keeping the business in check.

Sam: “I definitely think it’s going to going to help a lot, there are some situations where it can get out of hands and we’ve had a couple instances where we had to call the police. Having the DPS right there you know worse comes to worse we could literally just walk down the street and knock on the door and they could be right over.”

The new DPS substation is set for grand opening this Friday. Reporting from Marshall Street, Arnav Pokhrel, NCC News.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – Marshall Street sits adjacent to the campus of Syracuse University, and has provided Syracuse students with an escape from the daily routines of classes and dining hall foods. Students can pay visits to the Marshall Square Mall and Popeyes, as well as walk down to Varsity Pizza. Late nights on Marshall Street are very common with students at the University. To help with safety in the evenings, Syracuse University has announced the addition of a new DPS station located on the corner of South Crouse Avenue and Marshall Street.

Insomnia Cookies employee Sam Stavrakos said, “there’s not a lot of people that work at Insomnia, two to three people at a time so it can be kind of stressful. Sometimes it can get out of hand, sometimes people will get impatient, just not a good environment.”

For Stavrakos, the introduction of the new station provides another outlet for safety on Marshall Street. Insomnia Cookies is open until 1 a.m. every day, and stays open until 3 a.m. on the weekends. Stavrakos believes that increased security on hand will help business operations run smoothly into closing hours.

“I think it’s going to help a lot, there are some situations where we had to call the police. Having DPS right there, worst comes to worst we could just walk down the street and knock on the door and they could be right over,” said Stavrakos.

The new DPS station is set for a grand opening this Friday, March 29, and invites Syracuse staff and students out to take a look at the new building.
