SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – Father Chaplin’s Guardian Angel Society will host its 20th annual golf tournament Thursday.

The non-profit works to raise money for underprivileged children in central New York. The golf tournament is one of the fundraising events done throughout the year.

The tournament started in 2005 as a way to connect with the community.

The tournament has raised $285,000 total over the last 20 years, according to Krista Wright, the Operations and Marketing Director.

Wright said this year the goal is to raise $20,000 by the end of the tournament.

The money is used to help kids have the opportunity to get an education at private Catholic schools that the organization works with.

“We’re one of the few non-profits that give tuition aid k through 12, so this isn’t a one-off scholarship where you apply, and we only give you money for one year. We stick with kids throughout the whole time as long as they still meet our criteria,” Wright said.

The organization looks to help its students throughout the process.

“Not only are we helping kids be academically successful but morally successful,” Wright said.

The money is given out based on an application process similar to what is used by FAFSA for college, Wright said.

The golf tournament will be held Thursday at Radisson Greens.
