ArtRage Bringing Climate Change Awareness to Central New Yorkers ArtRage Bringing Climate Change Awareness to Central New Yorkers

Reporter: Director Rose Viviano says Central New Yorkers might not be concerned of climate change hitting Syracuse anytime soon. She hopes the gallery tells people why they should be.

Viviano: “So here’s what’s happening to us. Here’s how it will effect you. You may not see this change in where you live. You may not have mudslides in your neighbordhood. You may not understand what those things mean to your food source, so we’re gonna tell you about that.”

Reporter: Throughout the month, ArtRage is hosting workshops and public forums. The goal is to get residents talking about climate change.

Viviano: “At the very least, it leads to a different awareness and awareness is the first step towards any kind of action.”

Syracuse, N.Y. (NCC News) – Tucked away in Downtown Syracuse lies a unique art gallery that hopes to educate its visitors. ArtRage was the first non-profit gallery exclusively devoted to social justice in the entire country. The gallery has been supported by the community for over ten years. Director Rose Vivianio says that it serves as a space for activists’ voices to be heard.

ArtRage rotates through five different themes throughout the year; each cycle relating to a pressing social issue. The latest exhibit features climate change, which Viviano sees as a major global threat.

“So here’s what’s happening to us,” says Viviano. Here’s how it will affect you. You may not see this change in where you live. You may not have mudslides in your neighborhood. You may not understand what those things mean to your food source, so were gonna tell you about that.”

In addition to the display of paintings, ArtRage is offering programming throughout the month to get people thinking about the impact of climate change. Viviano says these conversations are priceless.

“At the very least, it leads to a different awareness and awareness is the first step towards any kind of action,” she says.

ArtRage strives to move people to action through their art and programming. Viviano hopes that the current gallery will drive Central New Yorkers to be more mindful of climate change, and take cautious steps to prevent it from dangerously impacting this area.
