The Auburn DoubleDays will start their 2021 season this June. Some may have never seen this coming as the team was expected to possibly leave the city. The future of the team was put into question when the minor leagues were reconstructed, as well as their season being canceled next year. With new ownership in Bob Ohmann and Don Lewis, the team will remain in Auburn for at least this upcoming summer.
“We are going to be very active in the community”, Lewis said. The team is looking to enhance the fan experience this year. Lewis said he wants the team to be community-oriented. He also wants the players to engage with the fans more, as well as the team running promotions for most of their home games.
“This isn’t Bob’s team, this isn’t my team, this is the community’s team”, Lewis said.
As of right now, Falcon Park can open at 25% capacity, which will fill up about 900 seats. The team will require a negative COVID-19 test, a facemask, and a temperature check for fans entering the ballpark. The baseball club will work with state and local officials as guidelines are relaxed going into the summer.
For teams like the DoubleDays, a key part of their success comes from host families. Since most of these players are not from the area, they must have a host family to have a roof over their head in the summer months. Anyone can become a host family, they just need an extra room.
“One thing that makes the organization very successful is host families”, Lewis said, “They open their house to 1, 2 or 3 guys in the summer months. All they got to do is provide a room.”
The team is still looking for host families. If you are interested, you can find more information on the teams Facebook page.
