Spring is here in Central New York, and perhaps no one is quite as excited about the changing of seasons as the folks over at the Baltimore Woods Nature Center in Marcellus. I spoke with Program Director Tom Meier about the numerous seasonal activities that Baltimore Woods offers.
“We’ve got all kinds of stuff happening… Our last farmer’s market is coming up, the amphibian alert program, we’re taking a field trip up to Derby Hill… We actually have pretty good visitorship here year round… Any time we get a sunny day, people flock.”
Meier claims that the picturesque landscape surrounding the nature center is what draws so many guests in.
“I think there’s a lot of unique things about Baltimore Woods. The property itself is gorgeous, we have a great diversity of habitats in these little 182 acres.”
Baltimore Woods is currently highlighting an exhibit called “Amphibian Alert,” where vistors can see a heap of freshly-migrated frogs and lizards who have left their underground dwellings for springtime.
“If people are interested in amphibians, we’ll be going down to our pond and watching for the tree frogs and peepers when they’re coming out.”
The staff at the nature center are looking forward to summertime, where Baltimore Woods hosts an overnight camp for kids who are curious about the outdoors.
“In the summertime, throughout the eight weeks, we’ll have over 600 kids come out and spend the day out in the woods playing, building forts, getting muddy, and just having a good time.”
Meier praised the variety of activities that Baltimore Woods offers for young ones year-round.
“We do a lot of hands-on, exporation kind of stuff, especially with the kids. We want people to come out and interact with nature.”

Spring has officially sprung, and the Baltimore Woods Nature Center in Marcellus is ringing in the new season with a handful of fun programs and exhibits.
Among those programs is Amphibian Alert, which showcases hundreds of frogs and lizards who have recently fled their underground homes to come up to the surface due to the changing of the seasons. With the weather in Central New York gradually warming, the Baltimore Woods Nature Center is a great destination for outdoor family fun.
“I think there’s a lot of unique things about Baltimore Woods. The property itself is gorgeous, we have a great diversity of habitats in these little 182 acres,” said Tom Meier, a Program Director at the nature center.
Meier was visibly excited when talking about some of the activities that Baltimore Woods offers, including bird watching, wildflower displays, and nature walks. As I was interviewing him this morning, he and a coworker were in the process of making a batch of maple syrup. “We do a lot of hands-on, exporation kind of stuff, especially with the kids. We want people to come out and interact with nature.”
As Central New York’s climate is heating up, Meier is looking forward to Summer, where he works as a director for Baltimore Woods’ Summer Camp. He says that it’s his favorite time of the year. “In the summertime, throughout the eight weeks, we’ll have over 600 kids come out and spend the day out in the woods playing, building forts, getting muddy, and just having a good time,” Meier said.
The nature center will continue to offer special springtime programs until May. If you’re looking for something to do outdoors this Spring, perhaps look no further than Baltimore Woods.
