SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Counseling and therapy are aids for mental health. Depending on the community, this is seen in individuals who believe in that peace begins with themselves.
Katherine Hyatt, Branches of Growth founder, was working with members of the community who struggled with mental health for her to dig deeper into ways to help. Involved in a suicide-related incident with a significant other, Hyatt says “that was a moment where I continued to grow that need for suicide prevention and help in our community.”
Hyatt discovered yoga many years ago and says she utilizes the practice of yoga as an integral piece of personal growth and development.
With these components in mind Hyatt branched out and opened her own practice in North Syracuse, Branches of Growth. This practice is for mental health and yoga practices created to assist the community in finding peace whether that be in their home, community, career or relationship. Their mission is to encourage growth, healing and inner peace.
Hyatt teaches various yoga classes and says she enjoys tackling all age students.
“I also teach gentle chair senior yoga over at the library,” said Hyatt. ” Often libraries like to have gentle senior chair yoga and so we get to go in there and I teach them breathe control and movements.”
Gentle chair yoga runs for four Fridays and these ladies focus on improving simple daily motions.
“I have trouble with balance and this is important to me to try and deal with it,” said yoga participate Jean Kent. “Its been very hard for me sometimes, but very worthwhile.”
Branches of Growth offers a time in the day where you can focus solely on yourself. Balance, breathing, and meditation are all aspects that are focused on aiding mental health.
