Break-ins around the Syracuse University Area Break-ins in Syracuse, NY

Understanding the process Syracuse is taking to keeps its residents safe.

By Jeddy Johnson SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News)  — Break-ins and other crimes are not uncommon phenomenon in the city of Syracuse, especially around the Syracuse University off-campus area.

Over the last 8 years the city of Syracuse has installed 110 surveillance cameras around the city to combat these crimes.

Some locations include:

  • Washington Square Park on the North Side
  • Richmond/Wall Street area on the West Side
  • The Upper Onondaga Park area on the South Side
  • The corner of Euclid and Lancaster Avenues on the Hill

Though there are surveillance cameras placed throughout the city, most areas still have blind spots and residents living in these areas are often subject to robbery.

Tatiana Inkles, a student living on an unmonitored street, was robbed over the summer.

“My car was broken into because I forgot to lock one of the doors so they just walked in,” Inkles said.

Department of Public Safety’s Chief John Sardino said Inkles’ story is one he often hears. A student who leaves their apartment or car door unlocked and comes back to items missing.

Ben Tupper, a landlord to hundred of Syracuse University residents living off-campus, donated $40,000 for the installation of cameras near his tenants. Nonetheless he believes that police at every corner and 1000 new cameras will not combat these robberies unless students take the proper first steps.

“Unless students do a better job of locking doors and being security conscious, they will always be easy targets,” Tupper said.

Here is a list of additional advice from Chief Sardino:

  • Lock your doors.
  • Think about your own personal safety.
  • Let someone know when you’re leaving the house.
