By Marsha Augustin Syracuse, NY (NCC News) Days after one of the world’s largest breast implant makers recalled their textured implants, a local plastic surgeon explains what women need to know and a few alternatives.

Syracuse physician Anthony Deboni has two patients who have contacted lymphoma cancer through breast implants.

He performs hundreds of breast implant surgery’s per year at his practice, CNY Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Both women had breast implant surgery approximately 15 years ago.

He says, using a smooth surfaced implant or fat from your body can help reduce the risk of lymphoma cancer.

“Suction fat from other parts of the patients body and inject it into their breasts as a graft, which will avoid the use of an implant,” Deboni said. “The alternative if you are going to use an implant, use a smooth surfaced implant which to date has not been shown to be associated with the ALCL lymphoma cancer. “Those are the only options right now.”

When getting implants it is important to know two components: what the surface and what the filling of the implant is.

The implants that have been recalled by Allergan based on an FDA report are the textured implants which have a rough surface similar to velcro. The smooth service with a saline or silicone filling has not been connected to cancer.

Deboni said  it is important to note ALCL lymphoma cancer is rare.

“There are 457 verified independent cases in the United States,” he said.

He added, “The best way to guarantee avoiding any health risk is to simply not get implants.”
