Three Casinos reopen in Central New York; local residents concerned about safety

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Three casinos have opened their doors for the first time since March of 2020.  Although Syracuse residents are excited, there are some worries due to Covid-19 cases still surfacing in the  Central New York area.

There are a few things that may keep Central New Yorkers from taking a chance at possibly winning a game or two. Safety takes precedent and Central New Yorkers say they are not willing to risk their lives for a winning slot.

“I don’t see how they are going to continuously keep people safe by, what is it? Spraying or sanitizing the machines every time someone new comes on it? I just don’t think it’s safe and that’s just too much traffic immediately,” said Syracuse resident Bianca Gambra.

Central New Yorkers were granted their request to have the casino reopened. However cleanliness and social distancing measures have to be in place to ensure comfort as the casino welcomes more people.

“Making sure everyone has on a mask, everyone is giving hand sanitizer as they come in, maybe even taking peoples temperatures, which is probably extreme, but I think that would make people safe, or myself really,” said Syracuse resident Gambra.

Another casino goer, Leah Francis, wants the Central New York casinos to follow the protocol of other businesses and not get too comfortable with opening their doors to customers without safety guidelines.

“I think that they would like have to limit the number of people that are in the casino. They would have to space out the line for people to get in the casino. Things that grocery stores are doing now,” said Francis.
