SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — The Poor People’s Campaign has created a platform to speak for low-income families. The less fortunate people of Syracuse have fallen behind in many ways due to the current pandemic. The unemployment rates are at an extremely high level, violence is consistently occurring, and health benefits are scarce.
With all of these issues at the forefront of Central New York, the Poor People’s Assembly was developed to be a liaison for growth and a change agent to provide poor people with assistance to survive these difficult times while supporting the Black Lives Matter movement.
“People hear the word poor, they often see that or think of that as a individual living at one of the homeless missions, living underneath the bridge and that’s not true. What that means is that we don’t have generational wealth accumulated to pass off to our younger folk or kids coming behind us. We are often living from paycheck to paycheck,” Rev. Marcus Jackson said.
The Poor People’s Campaign has earned the trust of the Central New York community by restoring hope that opportunities for families in the low-income bracket are possible while contributing to the poor people’s needs with emergency benefits as they navigate through their struggles.
“We are fortunate to have a network, a strong network of folk who support us and work with us that we would be able to put them in touch with. Folk that would be able to help at that very basic level,” Jackson said.
