SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Just days after a polar vortex overtook Syracuse and most of the Eastern United States, the Salt City experienced temperatures up to 60 degrees. This constant change is frustrating students and professors.
Last Thursday, professors across the Syracuse University campus individually cancelled classes, while the University announced that school would remain in session. Schools around the area, including ESF and SCSD cancelled classes for the day.
Syracuse students were flustered with how much the weather changed, as it starts to impact emotional and mental health. More students are getting sick, and that is a trend all around Onondaga County. Over 200 cases of influenza have been reported in the county, most of them occurring just in the new year.
The warm weather is certainly helpful for students moods and motivation to work, but the uncertainty does the opposite.
“I feel like I’m much happier when I can be outside and enjoying my time,” said Syracuse freshman Stephanie Weisz, who is experiencing her first Central New York winter.
“But it’s confusing, it is like I don’t know what I’m going to get.”
“I think it is crazy,” said Syracuse Sophomore Zach St. Laurent, “We had like 60 degrees and it was nice out this morning, but it is supposed to be like 30 later. So, it is just hard to dress for.”
The warm weather, even for a little bit, is very helpful for some students.
“I woke up in much better spirits when the sun was shining and it was warm in my house and I wasn’t shivering,” said Erin Gavle.
The weather changes aren’t stopping, as it is supposed to get into the 50s tomorrow yet be snowing next week.
