CB: Thanks Jeddy, Tops had announced that they were closing ten stores in New York at the end of November, but that will happen sooner than expected… the four stores that will close in the Central New York area will be closed by the end of the month.
Tops stores in Syracuse on South Salina Street and West Genesee Street will close on October 30th and Tops stores in Fulton and Lyons will close on October 27th.
I went to the Tops on South Salina Street and the manager declined an interview on the store’s closing but said that Tops will still own the property for the time being. Shelves were nearly empty and any remaining merchandise was being prepared to be sent to other Tops markets in the area.
Now there still are going to be Tops markets open in the area, including three in Syracuse, but the store on South Salina Street — among others– is about to close for good.
The owners of the mall owe close to eight million dollars in back taxes. the mall was set to be auctioned off today, but the owners filed an injunction, saying the property transfer is illegal. the once thriving mall has vacant stores including what was once Sears.

NCC News was at the South Salina St. Tops Market, where the manager declined to interview on the store’s closure. The owner did say that the property will remain to be owned by Tops, but their future plans for the building are unclear. The store had mostly empty shelves and was preparing to send some merchandise to other area stores that will remain open.
There will be eight stores remaining open in the CNY area, including three in Syracuse.
Additionally on the business front, the fate of Shoppingtown Mall is set to be determined next week. The property owners owe nearly $8 million in back taxes. The property was set to be auctioned off today, but the owners filed an injunction saying the property transfer would be illegal. A judge is set to rule on Nov. 1st.
