SYRACUSE N.Y. (NCC News) — High school sports brings students drama, action and excitement. There are few experiences like a game under the lights. But at the start of the pandemic, school sports were put on hold until they slowly came back with various restrictions. This past spring and summer have begun to turn the tide for schools and it looks like fall sports are planning to make their return.

John Rathbun, executive director of Section III, the high school athletics association that covers central New York and parts of upstate, said the state has not issued any safety rules for the upcoming season.

“There are no additional guidelines that are going to be restricted schools this fall for outdoor events,” Rathburn said.

Meaning sports like football, cross country and soccer are all cleared to play similarly to how they did before the pandemic. Section III has yet to receive word on how  indoor fall sports like volleyball will be able to proceed.

No matter what mandates come down from the state, Christian Brothers Academy is prepared; it has had plans in place over the past year that have allowed them to successfully play sports in both fall and spring. The school’s athletic director, John “Buddy” Wleklinski, said the teams are ready for anything.

“While I’m concerned about finding out exactly what rules are going to be in place, what I’m not concerned about is that we’ve gone through all the possible scenarios,”  Wleklinski said.

While  Section III and local schools await any word of COVID-19 safety regulations for indoor sports, outdoor sports are set to go on without restrictions.
