Central New York Prepares for Unusual Halloween CNY Prepping for an Unusual Halloween

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – Dee Wagner and the Community Wesleyan Church in Baldwinsville have held fun events on Halloween every year. Now, they’ll be returning, but with even more weight.

“It will be uplifting to see the people coming through,” Wagner said. “It will just be uplifting for us and hopefully for the kids who get to see everybody.”

The Drive-In Trunk or Treat at the church   is one of many events this fall to better enforce COVID-19 guidelines.

About six or seven years ago, the “Trunk or Treat” had a carnival, pumpkin painting, and a maze, Wagner said.  Now, kids will just drive by and pick up candy in their two smaller parking lots.

The event (from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday) will feature cars spaced out.

“It’s important for the kids just getting back to normal,” Wagner said. “I think they will receive this very well. Every year, it’s kind of different for us, so this will just be something different. And, hopefully, next year it can be something different again, where we can be a little more in touch with people.

“But, I think it’s just so important that we’re doing this,” he continued.  “For our church members to get out and do something for the community, too, because usually, we’re very active in the community. And we’ve kind of been a little bit closed up on that for the last six months.”

Other businesses and farms are making changes, too. Matthew Critz, of Critz Farms in Cazenovia, has made changes for his Fall Harvest Celebration, such as cutting the visiting capacity. The Celebration ends Oct. 25.

“So, that’s a good reason right there, to keep all these people working and the economy going,” Critz said. “Also, because of COVID, there’s not a lot to do. This is an outdoor activity, so it’s is about as safe as you can get. So, you’re providing a safe, outdoor activity for families during the harvest season.”
