By Michelle Knezovic Syracuse, NY (NCC News)- The Onondaga County Executive will be proposing their new budget this fall. One of their main focuses in this budget is early childhood development.

In this year’s budget, County Executive Ryan McMahon plans to focus on adding funds to programs that help kids starting at birth rather than kindergarten.

“Thirty-eight percent of kids in the whole county are kindergarten ready and 22% in the city so we really have to engage at birth,” McMahon said.

The county is aware that in order to help increase graduation rates they need to start helping the kids out before they even enter school. One of the areas McMahon said they will be focusing on is daycare for children.

They understand that if parents cannot afford daycare for their kids then they may as well not work. The county is working on this to make daycare more accessible and beneficial for the kids and guardians.

The budget will be proposed Sept. 17, 2019.
