SYRACUSE, N.Y.(NCC News) — Crave Dessert Studio is a bakery in Syracuse specializing in custom designed cookies. The dessert studio hosted their first cookie decorating class for Valentine’s Day on Feb. 10 at Salt City Market. This was the first class offered since 2020 and a dozen students partook in the fun of replicating six Valentine themed cookies. Owner Tykemia Carman decided to offer classes again as a way for her to interact with customers and extend an activity for them to enjoy.

Today in the United States, Black women are the fastest growing group of entrepreneurs, and their businesses continue to flourish each day. Carman started her career in the corporate world, but she decided to branch out and create a dessert studio. What once was a hobby turned into a business. She lost her mother seven years ago, and decorating was a way for her to distract herself but also perfect the craft of cooking decorating.

Many individuals encouraged Carman to decorate for birthdays, weddings and various events starting out.

“I was totally against it at first and then kind of embraced that this is the journey that I’m supposed to be on for right now. And it’s been successful, and I’ve been doing it ever since,” Carman said.

Carman provided in depth instructions for various techniques as she guided her students through each design. She wanted the class to be fun and lighthearted for all of participants. Many individuals experienced their first decorating class with friends, family and even significant others.

Zach Robbins decided to sign up for the class as a nice date night idea with his fiancé.

Robbins stated, “I think the thing that I liked most is being able to be a little creative and kind of design it however you needed to. She mentioned it’s very forgiving and so that’s really nice.”

Participants left class with six custom designed cookies and a treat bag with items to help them decorate in their spare time. Carman is looking forward to hosting a decorating class each month moving forward after the incredible turnout.
