SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — The Syracuse Crunch is celebrating a historic milestone as their owner and founder, Howard Dolgon, had been select into the New York State Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2024. This honor recognizes Dolgon’s significant contributions to the sport and his dedication to the Crunch and the Syracuse community.
Dolgon’s journey with the Crunch began in 1994 when he established the team, bringing American Hockey League (AHL) hockey back to Syracuse. Over the past 30 seasons, Dolgon has been the driving force behind the team’s success and innovation within the league. Under his leadership, the Crunch has not only excelled on the ice but also become beloved institution in the city.
Dolgon’s induction into the Hall of Fame places him alongside other hockey legends, including Denis Potvin, Mike Eruzione, and Ken Morrow. This recognition highlights his impact on the sport.
“It’s almost hard to put words into what the honor means because it’s so one it’s so unexpected and then, I guess I’m very grateful,” said Dolgon.
One of Dolgon’s most notable achievements includes organizing the AHL’s first outdoor game, the Mirabito Outdoor Classic, in 2010. The event set a single-game attendance record. Four years later, he spearheaded the Toyota Frozen Dome Classic in 2014, which set a North American indoor attendance record with over 30,000 fans. These events not only drew massive crowds but also put Syracuse on the map as a premier hockey destination.
Beyond organizing memorable events. Dolgon has led the Crunch to numerous successes, including multiple division titles and developing NHL talent.
Dolgon’s contributions extend beyond the rink. During his career in public relations and marketing, he created award-winning programs for major corporations and events.
The New York State Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on July 13 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Troy, NY.
