Dating violence sparks interest in self-defense classes Dating violence sparks interest in self-defense classes

By Alexandra Jennerjahn SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – October is Dating Violence Awareness month, and one survivor of domestic violence is making it her focus to teach women across Syracuse the strategies of self-defense.

June Worden has held various positions in public safety, and is a Marine Corp veteran. Following her retirement, she began teaching self-defense classes. She says the first thing she does when she begins each class, is let her students get to know her.

“You look at me and probably think, no that didn’t happen. But it did when I was in the military. So I too am a survivor,” Worden said.

Her classes last nearly three hours, and cover self-defense moves, proactive tips and self-awareness.

“Intuition is a super power. If your body is telling you something bad is about to happen, you need to pay attention to that and act appropriately to whatever is happening in front of you,” Worden said.
